Know and remember the most important things about your passport or eID card!

1. Always follow validity of the passport and identity card - eID card!

  • The passport and/or eID must be handed over to the Office within one month after the expiry of the term of validity of the document and new personal identity documents must be drawn up

2. The passport and the eID card are state property.

  • A personal identity document is not a property of a particular person, but a property of the Latvian state.
  • Documents - passport and eID card, MUST NOT be damaged, thrown away or destroyed when they become unfit for use, including when they have expired!
  • It is the duty of every document holder to carefully keep his or her passport and/or eID card!

3. If a passport or an eID card has been stolen, the Office or the State Police must be immediately notified about it.

  • In order to report that the identity document has been stolen, immediately apply to the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs by writing a free-form application and sending it by post (Čiekurkalna 1. līnija 1, k-3, LV-1026, Rīga) or by e-mail pasts@pmlp.gov.lv, signing it with a secure electronic signature, or send the application using the portal latvija.lv, choosing the section - Submission of a Proposal, Complaint, Question or Request, or apply to the State Police.
  • Remember! If the certificates included in the eID card were activated, then in order to suspend the activated certificates included in the eID card, you must immediately call the Latvian State Radio and Television Center at 67108787.
  • If you find another person's passport or an eID card, it must be delivered to the Office, the State Police or the State Border Guard.

4. If you have lost a passport or an eID card, report it to the Office without delay.

1. It is possible to report the loss of a personal identity document:

  • To announce that the identity document has been lost, apply to the Office by writing a free-form application and sending it by post (Čiekurkalna 1. līnija 1, k-3, LV-1026, Rīga) or by e-mail pasts@pmlp.gov.lv signing it with a secure electronic signature, or send the application via the portal latvija.lv by selecting the section - Submission of a proposal, complaint, question or request.
  • Remember! If the certificates included in the eID card were activated, then in order to suspend the activated certificates included in the eID card, you must immediately call the Latvian State Radio and Television Center at 67108787.

2. Make a prior appointment at any territorial division of the Office and apply for preparation of a new personal identity document.

5. If you change the personal number or enter into a marriage by changing the last name, you must also change the passport and/or the eID card.

  • When changing the last name, the previously issued personal identity documents become invalid.
  • Other documents, such as driver's license, bank cards, should also be replaced.
  • Check if your personal data shows the new last name, possibly through the free e-service “My Data in the Register of Natural Persons”.

6. If a personal identity document is necessary for travel outside of Latvia, it is possible to arrange a passport or eID card of the child as soon as the child receives the certificate of birth.

  • A passport or eID card is issued on the basis of the request of the mother or father, or legal representative of the child. That means that one of the parents or other legal representative, or authorized representative shall visit together with the child any of the territorial divisions of the Office.

7. The entry about the child in the parent's passport can be made free of charge.

  • In order to do this, it is necessary to refer to any territorial division of the Office in advance.
  • The passport will have to be left in the Division of the Office and will be available in the same Division after 10 working days.
