When declaring a new place of residence in Latvia or providing information about a place of residence abroad, the information about the person’s previously declared, registered, or indicated place of residence automatically becomes invalid and does not need to be cancelled. The previous address information in the Population Register is retained as a historical record.
Information about a declared place of residence is cancelled by the municipality or its institution in whose administrative territory the address is located.
The municipality cancels the information about the declared place of residence if:
-
the person provided false information when declaring their place of residence;
-
the person has no legal basis to live at the declared address.
The municipality has the right to verify the accuracy of the declared information:
-
on its own initiative;
-
based on an application submitted by the property owner or another interested party.
To learn about the procedure for cancelling the declared place of residence in a specific municipality, a person can contact the municipal residence declaration authority in whose administrative territory the address to be cancelled is located.
The fact that the declared place of residence has been cancelled is updated by the municipality in the Population Register, and the person is notified accordingly.
