Staff of OCMA - internationally recognised experts in the field of asylum affairs.

In the final article on asylum affairs, we will summarise the successful work of the Office's asylum experts in international events and tell:

  • What international events do the Office's asylum experts participate in?

  • What are the statistics on asylum seekers since 1998?

The operation of the asylum system is inconceivable without effective collaboration between colleagues in Latvia and the EU as a whole.

From the very beginning of the activities in the field of asylum affairs in Latvia, the employees of the Asylum Affairs Division have regularly represented the interests of our country in the institutions and working groups of the European Union, and continue to do so.

Since 2016, asylum experts have also been regularly involved in support measures in Greece, Italy and Cyprus to help address the asylum system in these countries as a result of the massive influx of immigrants.

The Office's staff has also participated as experts in the development of practical tools for the European Asylum Support Office, as well as successfully conducted training for asylum workers from other EU Member States.

Asylum statistics

In total, from 1998 till today, the status of asylum seekers was granted to 3031 people, refugee status to 226 people, and alternative status to 580 people (granted since 2002).
