From January 1, 2023, the eID card will be mandatory identity document

From this year, a procedure will be gradually introduced, according to which eID card will be made a mandatory identity document.

The eID card will be valid as a mandatory identity document from January 1, 2023.
An identity card will be mandatory for all Latvian citizens and non-citizens who have reached the age of 15.

The passport will henceforth be as an identity document of choice or as a travel document to countries where the eID card is not recognized as an identity and travel document.
