Information for citizens of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Upon withdrawal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland(hereinafter – the United Kingdom) from the European Union under the agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom, citizens of the United Kingdom and their family members retain all the rights of European Union citizens and their family members as defined in the Directive 2004/38/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council and in the Cabinet Regulation No. 675 of 30 August 2011 “Procedures for the Entry and Residence in the Republic of Latvia of Citizens of the Union and their Family Members” until 31 December 2020.

The above rights apply both to the citizens of the United Kingdom and their family members who are now residing in the Republic of Latvia, and to those of them who will enter and/or apply for a document confirming the right to reside during the period from 1 February 2020 to 31 December 2020.

The documents confirming the right to reside (eID cards or paper documents in A5 format) that are issued to citizens of the United Kingdom and their family members will continue to be valid until 31 December 2020 (unless the document’s validity period is shorter).

The citizens of the United Kingdom and their family members who are now residing in the Republic of Latvia or will enter the Republic of Latvia before 31 December 2020 and who will wish to continue residing in the Republic of Latvia must submit, before 30 June 2021, an application to the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (OCMA) and obtain a new residence permit. Each citizen of the United Kingdom will be sent a letter, to the place of residence declared in the Republic of Latvia, to inform about the time when submitting of applications will start (approximately in June-July 2020) and the procedure for obtaining a new residence permit.

The citizens of the United Kingdom and their family members who will wish to enter the Republic of Latvia after 31 December 2020 will enter and reside under the procedure laid down in the Immigration Law.
